So Ah Lim’s story goes……

We went to watch Monsters and Aliens this afternoon. The show ended about 7 pm, and Celine was hungry. She asked me if I can have dinner with her before sending her home. My heart was beating fast, and I crossed my fingers that she would follow behind. I sat on the chair, and looked back. Yes! She has followed behind me. Celine sat down. 回家 II

亲爱的 called me on Friday to tell me that her aunt has purchased train tickets to take the Sunday train to go back to Chengdu. At first they were supposed to take the plane, but it looks like her aunt's new born has not received his birth certificate and cannot board the plane. 亲爱的 said the entire journey will take more than 20 hours. She's going to feel terrible for a 20 hour train ride. She would rather fly, but doesn't have a choice. She also asked me if I would like to go to Chengdu to see her in a couple of weeks time. Since my June schedule is almost full, the earliest I can go is on the 1st week of July. She's not been home for 2 years, so let her spend some time with her mum, dad, and friends before we meet up again.

The Story of Ah Lim

Ah Lim is my business partner, also an occasional reader of my blog. He has a female friend, an ex-collegue, whom he has been dating regularly. They go dinner, drinks, movies, spa, shopping, etc...what most dating couples would do, except that they don't hold hands, because betwen them, it is just friendship. They know each other for more than 5 years and when Ah Lim quit his job, he still continue to keep in touch with her. I find it rather difficult to maintain a friendship status with a female friend, if I were to date her every week, but Ah Lim is able to withstand temptation. Years ago while working as a sales director in a IT company, I had a marketing manager worked for me. Due to our nature of work, we travelled together quite frequently, and without knowing, I actually fell in love with her. I stepped on the break when the idea of a divorce crop up in my mind. I was getting too emotional with the relationship. Today I still meet her once every few months for coffee, and that is it. I no longer have the kind of feelings for her.

Back to Ah Lim...whenever he had a date with his female friend, he would become excited and told me about the date with his "girlfriend". Maybe Ah Lim envies that I have a 亲爱的, so he felt something is missing in his life. One day, I told Ah Lim. "You've been dating your girlfriend for a long time, and nothing happens. Don't you think you're wasting your time and money? What if she actually likes you and is waiting for you to initiate? After-all, she is still a girl, so don't expect her to make the first move. You have to make progress during your next date. Make it or break it!"

A Girl Named Sue...The Saga Continues

Sue has returned to Chengdu. In fact we met at the Beijing Airport on Thursday afternoon as I was on the 4:00pm flight back to Singapore, while she was on the 4:30pm flight back to Chengdu. 亲爱的 was there to send us off. After receiving our boarding passes, we sat at Burger King until boarding time.

Sue said that she is only going back for 10 days. Thereafter, she'll be back to Beijing again, together with her Singapore boyfriend. Her boyfriend is going to work in Beijing for a few weeks before they go to Singapore together.

Sue said that when she's home, she'll get her passport done, and her boyfriend would apply a visa for her to come to Singapore. She asked if 亲爱的 can come along with her. It's actually not a bad idea. Sue's boyfriend can play host while they are here, as I won't be able to accompany them for the entire day. Moreover, if they can stay in her boyfriend's house, that could save some money on hotel expenses.

Sue's boyfriend didn' know that she has all along been living in Beijing. She told him that she's working in Chengdu, and when her Singapore boyfriend suggested that he visits her in Chengdu, she decides to return home to see him. I told Sue that Singapore men dislike dishonesty. For whatever reason even if it is 善意的谎言，she should not lie to him. Moreover, Singapore men are not so stupid. There are loopholes in her lies. Sue thinks that her boyfriend is going to believe in every word she says.

The Singapore trip is still a long way to go. I doubt if their relationship could last for the next 2 months. She's been telling too many lies to her boyfriend. I seriously doubt if her boyfriend can be so stupid, or just pretends to be stupid. For my 亲爱的, I'm glad she doesn't lie to me. She's one of the rare China dolls that doesn't know how to tell a good lie.

南锣鼓巷

Whenever I'm with my 亲爱的， its not only about huggings and kissings, we also like to explore Beijing together. Although I've been to Beijing numerous times, I've not visited the 南锣鼓巷, so after a sumptuous dinner at 小渔山 in 东直门 on Wednesday evening，we've decided to take a stroll at the 南锣鼓巷. This is probably one of the best preserved areas in Downtown Beijing, famous for its 胡同 and 四合院, but now it has been tranformed into a busy street with restaurants, cafes, bars, and clothing and handcraft shops that line its hutong laneways.





My 亲爱的, unable to withstand temptation, and had to walk into the boutique to check out the summer dresses.

Beijing Airport

I've arrived Beijing last Friday late evening, about 10:45 pm. 亲爱的 was at the airport to meet me. However I didn't get to see her until 11:30pm because of the Swine Flu check. I have to fill up a questionnaire about my travel history and health status, and this is reasonable. But what is ridiculous is that 2 full loads of passengers have to crowd in a small area to wait for their turns to walk through 2 counters to check on the forms and be screened by the fever detectors. What made it worse was that the air conditioning system wasn't not working well. It was really stuffy and anyone with flu in the area should easy spread the viruses to others. I managed to pass that counter, got my passport stamped, and picked up my luggage after 40 minutes. I walked out to the arrival hall, and saw my 亲爱的 waiting for me. She was so happy to see me and gave me a good hug. Although it was just 2 weeks ago that we've just parted, seems to be a long time.

回家

It has been 2 years that my 亲爱的 has not gone back to 成都, not even during 春节. Her aunt is going back to 成都 next month, and so my 亲爱的 has decided to join her. After all, she has not seen her parents and grandma for a long time. I asked 亲爱的 whether I can visit her in Chengdu, and she hasn't given me a reply yet. While she's back home, she will have her passport done. I promised her that I'll bring her to Bangkok to celebrate her birthday in August. Although we've just parted for 2 weeks, I already missed her. I like to see her one more time before she goes home, so I have arranged a trip to Beijing this Friday. After this trip, I don't know when I will see her again.

Revelation

My 亲爱的 knows about this blog, but she didn't ask to read it. She thought that I am quite 无聊 to have a blog like this. I told her that this is our memory, and just in case if we were to go separate ways in the future, our story is still kept in this blog forever. Obviously she's concern that her name is revealed here, but I promised her that neither her name nor my name will appear in this blog. When I wanted to snap the scar on her thigh, it took a lot of persuasion from my end before she agreed to it. She didn't want her fair and smooth thigh to be shown on the internet. My 亲爱的 is learning English, so last night while we were chatting on skype, I gave her the URL to this blog. I am trying to motivate her to learn faster. However, it won't change the way I'm updating this blog, because right now, she only understands 20% of what is written here. It will take another 18 months before she knows every single word here. I also told her that she cannot ask me questions after reading it. I look forward to read her comments here.

An Unforgettable Experience

An unforgettable experience is an event that has a great impact on a person's life. It can also be something that can change a life for ever. My 亲爱的 worked in 佛山 as a door-to-door cosmetic sales girl when she was 18 years old. At that age, she was innocent, but playful. She had no ambitions and her life was between work and play. She had a group of friends whom she hang out with after work. She had a boyfriend at that time, but he was not part of this gang. Her boyfriend was the son of her 阿姨's manager at the bag factory in 盐步镇. On her 19th birthday, the gang decided to celebrate her birthday in a club. They had lots of alcohol. One idiot suggested to do drag racing on their motorbikes. The girls would be the pillion riders. 亲爱的 did not know the danger and since it was her birthday, she joined in the fun. The unexpected happened. The rider couldn't stop in time and hit a truck. The bike skidded and both the rider and 亲爱的 were flung off the road. Surprisingly, 亲爱的 did not sustain any visible injury. She got up immediately, walked 2 steps, and fell again. Her right thigh was fractured. As for the rider, he had sustained head injury.

亲爱的 was hospitalized in 佛山 hospital for 2 months to have the broken bones treated. The doctor had to put in steel plates into her thigh to hold the bones together. The bill and expenses came out to be about RMB30,000. Insurance claim was only a few thousand RMB. The rider also compensated some money to 亲爱的. The gang pooled together a few thousand RMB. Obviously her parents had to fork out the rest. Her 堂妹 quit her job and took care of her at the hospital. She helped to clean 亲爱的 as she was bedridden. The doctor did a great job. She did not have to limp after recovery. After 亲爱的 was discharged, she went back to 成都 to rest. That was when she decided to break off with her boyfriend. She wanted to forget her past in 佛山 and move on with a new life. A few months later, she decided to work for her aunt in Beijing. Shortly after that, I met 亲爱的。 亲爱的 said if this incident had not happened, she could have settled down in 佛山 and married her boyfriend. Maybe we're just fated to be together.

Canton Week

I am in Guangzhou for a week already, and so is my 亲爱的. Tomorrow she'll be back to Beijing, and I'm going back to Singapore. However, I'll be seeing her in 2 weeks time as I need to make another trip to Beijing soon. While in Guangzhou, my 亲爱的 went to 佛山市南海区盐步镇 to visit her 阿姨 and 堂妹, and stayed there for 2 nights. They are working in a bag factory. She is quite close to her 堂妹 and have not seen her for 2 years already, although they speak on the phone quite often. When my 亲爱的 had an accident more than 2 years ago in 佛山 while working as a cosmetic salesgirl, she was hospitalized for 2 months, and her 堂妹 actually quit her job to take care of her in the hospital. Her 堂妹 also came over to Guangzhou and stayed with us for a night. We visited the White Cloud Mountain and took many photographs.

My 亲爱的 has bought quite a few pieces of clothes and a few pair of shoes in Guangzhou. In fact I encouraged her to buy her summer wear over here as the clothes are relatively cheaper than Beijing. We went shopping in 白马服装城 and 北京路. What I like about my 亲爱的 is that she doesn't spend lavishly, only buying what is value for money. She's also very good at bargaining. I also bought a wallet and a belt for myself. We will need to start packing this evening and think of how she can bring her stuff back as she only has a small luggage with her.
